Bayer HealthCare sponsors research professorship at TiHo

How can drug products be administered through the skin?

Hannover - On January 1, 2008, Privatdozent Dr. Wolfgang Bäumer will take up his work as Research Professor of “Veterinary Dermatopharmacology” in the Institute for Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo). His position is being funded for a period of five years by Bayer HealthCare AG.

Bäumer’s work will focus on new therapeutic approaches involving dermal administration of drug products to animals. Attention is increasingly turning to alternative methods of administering drugs in veterinary medicine since oral administration, for example, can be problematic in practice. One alternative is to administer drugs through the skin. This approach would make things considerably easier for dog owners, for example. Bäumer will therefore be investigating the pharmacological action of substances which need to be absorbed through the skin. He will be working specifically with new treatment strategies for atopic dermatitis in dogs. Atopic dermatitis is a common allergic skin disorder.

“Practically oriented research into veterinary drugs forms an important basis for innovation and strengthens the position of Germany as a research location," said Professor Michael Londershausen, Head of Research&Development in the Animal Health Division at Bayer HealthCare, explaining the company's involvement in this area.

Dr. Wolfgang Bäumer has been on the academic staff of the TiHo since 2000, and his major area of interest is immunopharmacology. He qualified as a veterinary specialist in pharmacology and toxicology in 2006, and was awarded a university teaching qualification in the same subject in 2007.

In September 2006, representatives of Bayer HealthCare AG and the TiHo concluded an agreement to finance this research professorship. The professorship will be integrated into the group working under Professor Manfred Kietzmann in the Institute for Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy (which is headed by Professor Wolfgang Löscher).
